Youth
Prevention Program (YPP) makes it fun and
easy for children to make smart choices
Adelante also
provides support for youth ages 6-12 through
its Youth Prevention Program (YPP). YPP engages
youth through comprehensive, holistic and culturally
competent means. YPP is so much more than a prevention program; it empowers Latino youth by helping them
discover individual interests and talents and
by emphasizing life opportunities made possible through education.
YPP runs as
an after-school program for two hours each day,
Monday through Thursday, throughout the school
year. It also operates as a summer program during
the summer months. YPP serves all of Lucas County, but it focuses primarily on the
Toledo Public School district. It accepts youth
from other school districts and from Lucas County Protective Services as well.
YPP achieves results through:
Academic
Assistance – Adelante instills the importance of a quality education by developing an individualized
academic plan for each student, providing
daily one-on-one or small-group tutoring
and encouraging regular library use.
Cultural
and recreational activities – In order to encourage holistic development, Adelante sponsors activities such
as weekly dance, art and/or Spanish lessons,
and sports that build self-discipline and impulse control while enhancing physical fitness.
